Introducing... Scott Conley · 871 days ago by Me

I’ve been kicking around the idea of a new feature for geoffreyarnold.com, namely posting pictures of my friends at their finest moments.

Without further ado… Scott Conley.

The Great iPod Revival · 880 days ago by Me

Lindsey called me all flustered on Monday explaining that her iPod was completely hosed, and that she didn’t have backups of some of the files stored within. From the sound of it the hard drive was repeatedly spinning up and back down, failing to boot.

A quick Google search revealed some rather unorthodox methods for reviving hard drives from the grave, including freezing them.

With ample skepticism, I dropped the iPod into a ziploc bag and placed it in the freezer on Thursday night. 24 hours later I attempted the recovery.

The results: it actually works. I was able to create a disk image of the iPod using Apple’s Disk Utility, and of the 313 files stored on the iPod, only 5 were reported corrupt by diff.

And no, this isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke.

I Lost My Phone · 882 days ago by Me

I lost my phone last night. Actually, I know exactly where it is but I’ll never see it again. I purchased the phone shortly after I moved to NYC so I’ve lost every number I received since then. What a treat.

MacBookPro = PowerBook + iSight - MacMini · 882 days ago by Me

So that was the resolution to the Mac Mini debacle.

For those who don’t know, I lost a bet to Conley and the bounty was a Mini. The challenge was tossing a plastic lizard into a pink pumpkin. After previously draining two reptiles I foolishly succumbed to his taunts and took the bet. You can guess how it turned out.

While I lost the bet I’m happy to report that no Minis exchanged hands. Instead, we worked out the following exchange:

... for …

So I may no longer have the hottest hardware on the block but at least I don’t have to stare a Mini in the face everytime I venture to the other side of Lincoln. Now if I could only get rid of that pumpkin…

New York, New York · 882 days ago by Me

For those of you who still don’t know I moved to NYC at the end of November. I’m working at IFS, living in Brooklyn and playing, well, everywhere. To quote an old friend:

bklyn’s the good stuff. and the hard stuff. but mostly good. made me crazy and made me feel alive to live there the past two summers. kicked teh[sic] shit out of me and kicked good shit into me.

Well put, Dani.

So if you’re in town or just looking to get dirty for a weekend, give me a call and we’ll see what trouble we can get into.

New Server, New Site. · 882 days ago by Me

The new geoffreyarnold.com. In late October I purchased a Sun Fire X2100 and racked it earlier this month at Burst.net. While the hardware rocks the software wouldn’t even boot so I scrapped it for Debian and haven’t looked back. If you can get past the horrendous sales experience I highly recommend picking up one of these machines. Save yourself some $$$ and go for the base model and pickup the hard disks and memory elsewhere.

And if your looking for the old geoffreyarnold.com, you can temporarily access it here until I get around to moving that content over to Textpattern.
